E. Zachary Dinardo gave a presentation entitled, "EMTALA Update," at the 2008 Emergency Medical Services Forum of the Illinois Critical Access Hospital Association on October 21, 2008.
James D. Broadway, John A. Kauerauf, E. Zachary Dinardo and Lisa H. Hartzler spoke at the annual meeting of the Illinois Critical Access Hospital Association on October 9, 2008. Their presentation was entitled, "2008 Health Law Update," and provided an overview of recent changes to the regulations under Federal Ethics in Patient Referrals Act (commonly referred to as Stark III), the Americans with Disabilities Act, and the Nurse Practice Act.

Harms Hartzler lectured
at a full-day seminar on “Government Investigations of Health
Care Providers: Prevention and Response,” on January 30,
2008, in Springfield, Illinois.
The seminar was designed for hospital administrators, compliance
directors, medical records directors, health information directors,
office managers, release of records professionals and attorneys.
Participants were introduced to the numerous government agencies
that investigate health care providers, became familiar with applicable
Federal and State statutes and their enforcement, and learned how
to develop and implement an effective compliance program and how
to organize and conduct an internal investigation.
Ms. Hartzler provided an overview of State and Federal health
care statutes and enforcement agencies. Ms. Cour and Mr. Dinardo
spoke on “Preventing and Preparing for Investigations” and “Responding
to Investigations.” Two Assistant United States Attorneys
from the Central District of Illinois also discussed Federal civil
and criminal investigations.
On January 17, 2008, John Kauerauf made a presentation
to the Human Resources User Group of the Illinois Critical Access
Hospital Network on the topics of Illinois' new smoking ban and
the legal issues surrounding random drug testing.
