CHARLES H. NORTHRUP

(1914 – 2008)

Sorling Law - Charles H. Northrup <photo>     Charles H. Northrup, over a legal career that spanned 65 years, epitomized the highest ideals of the legal profession.  A native of Bloomington, Illinois, and graduate of Illinois Wesleyan University and the University of Illinois College of Law, Charles joined the Sorling, Catron and Hardin law partnership in February of 1946 after serving in his country’s service during World War II.  A member of the U.S. Army, Charles was honorably discharged with the rank of Major and after eighteen years in the Army Air Force Reserves obtained the rank of Lt. Colonel, Judge Advocate General.

Soon after initiating his legal career, Charles helped lead a successful grass roots effort to crack down on illegal gambling in Springfield in the late 1940s.  His service to the Springfield community continued in the 1950s as a member of Springfield School Board, and in the 1970s as a member of Springfield’s Library Board, where he was instrumental in the decision-making leading to the construction of the City’s current public library facility.  Charles later served as legal counsel to the Springfield Airport Authority for more than 20 years.

In recognition of Charles’ service to his community and his success as a lawyer, in 1975 his law partners voted to rename the Sorling, Catron and Hardin firm Sorling, Northrup, Hanna, Cullen & Cochran.  Charles was a recognized  authority in the fields of real estate and municipal law, an expertise that led to his direct involvement with many of Springfield’s larger real estate developmental activities throughout his career.  Charles was also amongst the attorneys who helped to create the Illinois Attorney’s Title Guaranty Fund in 1964.

Even following his retirement in 2004 at age 90, Charles’ standing in the legal community continued to be recognized.  Charles was named a “Pillar of the Bar” by the Illinois Bar Foundation in 2007 and received the Judge Harlington Wood, Jr. Award for a lifetime of excellence in the practice of law from the Sangamon County Bar Association later that year.

Charles was a devoted husband and father of five, a tireless worker on behalf of his clients, a patriot, and gentleman whose kindness, gentle humor, and integrity continue to be an example and inspiration for all who work in the firm that proudly bears his name.
